I Got Stuck in Japan During COVID-19

最終更新: 2020年9月10日

In this video we could see two different SDGs pop up.

The first was SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Here, the aspect of strong institutions is key, as governments have to fulfill their responsibilities of ensuring the safety of their citizens. As we could see in the video, Nepal had started to work with their embassies to ensure exactly such responsibilities were looked after, but unfortunately did not follow through with everyone. Thus, it is imperative that we elect government officials that understand their role inside and outside of their country in protecting their citizens by using the forms of diplomacy that are not solely available but just. If we cannot trust our governmental institutions to act with their own people in mind, it can quickly lead to distrust and feelings of disregard for the needs of the many.

While this is always the case, due to COVID-19 the issue of mental stress has been amplified even more. This connects us to the second SDG mentioned in the video, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. As we saw, especially for the elderly the pandemic has created an almost constant state of anxiety within their minds, which was fed by the worry about being taken care of by their elected leaders. While the pandemic will pass at some point in the future, the effects of prolonged mental stress may linger on for a much longer time.

Check out how easy it is to support your local government meeting their responsibilities in our Global Community Resources in the Social Development category.
