The Royal Flush: Toilet Water Saving Tip

最終更新: 2020年9月10日

As we know from our Top 5 Water Waster at Home Countdown, the toilet is the biggest single water consumer in our households. It consumes many gallons of water every day. But this is something that we can easily reduce. In the video above, we could see a solution that everyone can easily do at home that not only saves your water bill, but can help to increase our community’s fresh water capacity and meet Sustainable Development Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation!

Materials You Will Need:

  • A toilet with access to the water tank

  • A bottle or container with an air-tight lid that fits into the tank

  • A filler with the same or greater weight as water, such as water itself, sand, or soil for example

Instructions:

1) Take your container and fill it with your weights. Make sure there is enough weight to hold the container on the ground of the tank so it doesn’t move around or float.

2) Carefully remove the lid from your toilet’s water tank.

3) Place the container inside the water tank and make sure it doesn’t touch any of the moving parts. You can easily check this by flushing and observing.

4) Place the lid back on the water tank, making sure it fits as it is supposed to.

5) Voila! You have successfully built your own water-saver.

We used a 1 Gallon used water container. While this may seem like a minuscule action, it will actually help to reduce our water usage by around 1 Gallon every time we flush. With an average of 5 flushes per person per day, in a household of 3 people that means saving 15 Gallons of water every single day!
